Oceanfront means there is no other property or lot between the home and the beach. Expect gorgeous ocean views, although sand dunes may obscure parts of them. See how we categorize every home on our home locations page.
Not always. Access depends on the home. Some have a private walkway to the beach, and others have a community beach access close by. Each home's listing has the details.
Semi-oceanfront homes are one lot from the beach, sometimes with a street in between. Oceanside homes are on the east side of NC 12, so there's no major road to cross to reach the beach, and the distance ranges from under 500 feet to over 1,000 feet. Second-tier oceanfront lots are shaped like piano keys with the narrow end facing the ocean, so views to the side may be partly blocked by a neighboring home.
Many do. Private pools are generally available from the first week of May through the second week of October, and some can be heated for an extra fee. Hot tubs are available year-round. Check each home's amenities for exact dates. See our private pool and hot tub guides.
Yes, at homes that are pet-friendly. Browse our pet-friendly rentals, and check each town's beach rules, since a few towns limit dogs on the beach during summer days.
Red flags mean swimming is prohibited, so please heed them. Rip currents, sand bar drop-offs and submerged objects are common hazards, so keep an eye on children and read the signs at the beach. Our beach safety guide covers what to look for.
Only in Nags Head, by permit during ideal conditions. Beach bonfires are never allowed in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores, Duck, Corolla or the 4x4 beaches, and fireworks and sparklers are illegal on all Outer Banks beaches. Read more about beach bonfires.
Select homes do. Cabana service sets up and takes down an umbrella and beach chairs each day from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Look for it in the home's amenities, and see our beach cabana page.
Maintenance projects are currently planned for 2027 in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, and plans can change. Crews work on short sections of beach at a time, and a section may be closed for a few days. Learn more about beach nourishment.
